Plot

In an unidentified gloomy town, with urban decay and dismal weather, the experienced Detective Paul S. Saunders is partnered up with a less experienced and ill-tempered Detective Callum Brown, who recently transferred to the department.

Their investigation was to find a killer who murdered a man recently, showing the whole murder on CCTV camera. This unknown man wore a dark hood the night of the murder and a mask to cover his facial features. The detectives knew there was something going on here since the murderer knew he had committed the murder on tape, therefore leading the two detectives to thinking that this might be one of many.

The victim of that night was an innocent civilian named George Sandell, his family strongly believed that no one had a grudge on George and couldn’t believe why anyone would do such a thing. This lead to another murder case the following night, exactly the same time, exactly the same costume and once again the whole murder caught on camera. This was now a case of a serial killer and became much more serious for more people could be in danger. Another similarity between the two murders was that once again it was another innocent civilian who was murdered.

Impatience began to occur from Detective Brown leading to fierce arguments between himself and Detective Saunders, the morale of the team was no good at this stage as they did everything they could to find this serial killer but couldn’t find anything.

After long work on this case and 5 total murders, all on CCTV camera, all at the same time every night and all on innocent and random civilians, a note was left behind by the killer after the 6th; it read ‘Remember Jane Scott, Saunders? Remember what you did to her?’ Instantly after reading this message Detective Saunders had a flash back. 6 years ago when Saunders was younger with less experienced he was called upon a mission to shoot a man who was robbing a bank and had a woman hostage. This woman’s name was Jane Scott, she was completely innocent, and in an attempt to try and shoot the robber, Saunders missed and hit the innocent Jane in the head. Saunders himself decided to notify her husband one to one that he had miss fired and accidently shot his wife.

6 years later, Saunders is now by no means coincidently on a case where a man seems to be planting revenge on him by killing innocent people. After reflecting on this he decides not to tell his partner detective brown about his history, and tries to investigate this personal case on his own when he is alone. Brown still asks him questions on what that note meant, but Saunders simply tells him he doesn’t understand it. Brown becomes impatient with Saunders’ reluctance to say what that note meant leaving him no choice but to take him off the case through disobedience to instructions and emotional attachment to the case itself, which could lead to a disaster. Despite being taken off the case, Saunders carries on and tries to find this man. As murders keep on coming, Brown can’t handle it and sends out a warning to the public.

Saunders finally speaks to him on the phone and is now certain that it is Jane’s husband. Jane’s Husband (Harrison Scott) tells him that for years he has dreamt of killing Saunders for what he did, and now he decided that he was going to kill as many innocent people as he can as revenge for what he did, “My wife was as innocent as everyone I have killed, so if she has to die then why should everyone else live… I’m going to kill you sanders, I’m going to make you beg for mercy”. Saunders now knows it’s personal, therefore giving himself up as a sacrifice to save the innocent people. They organize a meeting place, and Harrison strictly demands no police.

Saunders arrives there, and it is a rundown building, with pictures pinned to the wall of all of those he has killed and is going to kill, including Saunders himself. Then Harrison appears, takes off his mask and reveals his face. As they chat for prolonged periods of time Saunders tries to talk some sense in to him, but it doesn’t work and soon Harrison begins the torturing period.

Brown and the crew try to contact Saunders in desperate need for his help, but no answer, Brown is then suspicious something is going on, therefore him and the team go to Saunders’ house, but there is no sign of him. As they search for clues, eventually they find an address written down by the phone. Brown knew then that Saunders was in trouble and Saunders had put the address there purposely.

A swat team is rounded up to go to this address. And as the swat team arrive Harrison hears them and panics, accusing Saunders of bringing a team. Saunders tries to calm him, but when the swat team enter the building Harrison shoots Saunders in the head, just like Saunders shot his wife in the head. Almost immediately afterwards the swat team shoot down Harrison.

The film ends with a zooming in close up of Saunders’ picture on the wall, with text on it reading ‘AN EYE FOR AN EYE’, clearly showing that this whole time Harrison Scott was planning to get his revenge on Detective Saunders for taking his wife away from him.

Characters

Harrison Scott
This Character is the  serial killer played by Matt Wetton. He commits his first murder in the film opening by stabbing the victim from behind in the back and then dragging him away, all of this being caught on cctv showing straight away his no fear attitude by knowing he wont get caught and thinking that he is better than the two detectives. He reveals nothing because of his clown mask he wears for each and every murder he commits. his Multi-murders and his way of playing games with the detectives turns him into the most feared by the locals and causes panic on the streets. His motive is driven by the fact that 6 years ago Saunders killed his wife who was perfectly innocent in a miss fire and is seeking revenge by killing many innocent civilians.

Paul Sanders
This character is played by Ollie Coulson. He is first established during the crime scene the morning after the first murder when he discovers the body of the victim and begins his investigation. Not much is given away during the film opening other than that he is the more experienced of the two detectives and is the leader of the two. He looks the part with his long brown detective coat and the brown detective hat. Although there is something mysterious about him that detective Brown can sense.

Callum Brown
This character is played by Rhys Harries. He also is first established in the crime scene the morning after the first murder. His reaction to it is a lot more emotional and suprised, showing the lack of experience and his immaturity which is exactly the way he is throughout the entire film. The contrast between the two detectives creates an effect of two completely different characters goes together. Other than the immaturity and the lack of experience callum is extremely intellegent and wise, and together they have the power to catch the serial killer, however this doesn't go to plan and they find it too hard to work together.

Inspirational films

Psychological Thriller

The genre we have chosen is a thriller, although we're going to using slap dash cuts inspired by Edgar Wright, we will use the suspense and tension building used in Shutter Island for it too is a thriller. Shutter Island tends to use close ups, to emphasize the characters emotions which is used a lot in thriller films to build tension. This is what we intend to use in our film opening.

Slasher Thriller

Friday the 13th the remake is a thriller/horror with a prominent serial killer figure in called Jason, we feel that this movie is perfect for what we want because we would like to give the idea of a mass murderer along with the idea of an intense story and dark setting.

Crime Thriller

The film Se7en has heavily influenced our choice of mise en scene. Our film opening will consist of an inspector for which will be similarly dressed to the character that Morgan freeman plays. It is a long brown coat, with a typical detective hat. The other will also have a detective coat and hat, and both will wear Aviators sunglasses.

Inspirational Director

Marcus Nispel is another one of our inspirations because he has directed many thriller/slasher movies that have a serial killer or a main murderer, as this is what we would like to achieve, we feel someone like this is a perfect inspiration along with Edgar Wright that directed films like Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead.

Marcus Nispel (born 26 May 1963) is a German–American feature film director and producer, and formerly a director of television commercials and music videos. Many of his films have been remakes, all of which have met with a negative critical reception.

In 2003 Platinum Dunes owner filmmaker Michael Bay hired Nispel to direct the remake of the classic 1974 horror film The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Nispel's version was a box-office success but garnered mixed to average critical reviews. A prequel and a comic-book series based on the film soon followed. The success of the remake ushered in a series of remakes of horror films from the 70's and the 80's.

In 2007 he directed and produced the epic action film Pathfinder, a remake of a Norwegian film with the same title. The film failed at the box-office and was poorly received by critics. Nispel blamed the failure on 20th Century Fox's demands to reduce the gore and violence (requiring digital manipulation of scenes that were already shot) to earn an "R" rating, and to sacrifice plot development to improve runtime and pacing. Despite being labeled a flop, the film gained a small cult following, and was followed by a successful graphic novel adaptation.
In 2009 he directed the remake of Friday the 13th, intended to reboot the franchise. It was box-office success and the second highest-grossing film in the Friday the 13th series, but met with negative response from critics and fans of the original film series.
Nispel directed the 2011 reboot of the Conan the Barbarian franchise. He has stated that this was his childhood dream project.

Inspirational Director

Edgar Howard Wright was born on April 18th 1974. He is an English film and television director and writer. He is most famous for his work with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost on the films Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, the TV series Spaced, and for directing the film Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. His use of 'Slap Dash' in the films Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz has inspired us to use this type of directing on our film opening.
